Aim.To identify the pharmacological effects of endogenous
and exogenous melatonin as a supplement to basic
anticonvulsant therapy due to its neuroprotective properties.
Methods.The relevant literature was reviewed.
Results.Preparations of melatonin (exogenous melatonin)
are currently used for the treatment and prevention of many
diseases. Many experimental and clinical studies point to
the anticonvulsant properties of melatonin. Chronobiological
studies show that seizures are dependent on the time of day,
the level of solar activity, and seasonal fluctuations. The
analysis of the literature showed that patients with epileptic
seizures have a decrease in the blood concentration of
melatonin. The use of anticonvulsants leads to oxidative
stress with subsequent neuronal damage. Accordingly, the
increased concentration of free radicals leads to disease
progression.
Conclusion.Considering the antioxidant properties of
melatonin, the use of melatonin along with base anticonvulsant
therapy appears feasible.
