Dermatitis herpetiformis is a rare but persistent
immunobullous skin condition. It is extremely rare in infancy
and early childhood. A few cases have been seen in the
neonatal period. The infants usually have erythema, urticaria,
and bullae within the first few days of life. Vesicles and
papules, arranged linearly, usually appear on the trunk and
limbs, and they recur repeatedly during the following weeks.
Modern data about the causes, course, differential diagnosis,
and diagnostic and treatment principles of dermatitis
herpetiformis are described, and a case is presented.
Key words: dermatitis herpetiformis, newborns
